A little bit about me
Hello, my name is Elliot Swensson, I am 17 years old, I am Dutch but I have lived in England all my life. At the moment I am studying a national diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture at Askham Bryan college, York in England. For our course we were told to find a work placement for 6 months. I had already found my placement as I was already doing one day per week at Airedale Tree Surgeons. We had organised this along time ago and this was fine to work there. A week and a half into my placement I was told to leave because of health and safety reasons, if not doing so would have resulted in me being removed from my course at college. I had no other choice but to leave the firm and find another placement in the area.
So immediately being told this news I went looking for a new placement. With no luck at all nobody wanted to offer me a placement because of the shortage of work in England at the moment and with the recession kicking in as well. The search went then over seas to Holland where my grandparents were looking for a placement for me. They came across a few businesses which were interested but no further action took place. Lorsheijd Groen were the most enthusiastic about me so Mr. Lorsheijd offered me a interview. Two weeks later I arrived in Holland for the interview and everything went superbly well and I was offered the placement and I was delighted to take the offer.
This was an amazing offer as nobody from the college had done a work placement before in Holland so nobody knows how businesses work over there. I also speak a little dutch so this would be a great chance to improve my dutch as well.
The Business
I was amazed to see how calm and relaxed the business was, in England businesses seem to be always frantically rushing about and nothing ever seems to fit into place where as over in Holland everything seems to fall into place smoothly. There is also a nice relaxed feeling about the business and always seems to be in a good working environment. In England they seem to rush about more and don't do the work the way its supposed to be done, in England they like to cut corners a lot and that’s how accidents happen. Where as in Holland nearly everything is done to perfection and no corners are crossed and that’s why Holland are so much more advanced in some things than England and that’s the difference.
The Employees
The employees of Lorsheijd Groen are much more relaxed and calm about their work and are always willing to help or trying to work around the problem, where as in England they would just leave it for someone else to do. Each employee has a massive amount of knowledge and I think that is why they are so efficient at what they do and that is why Lorsheijd Groen has such a good reputation and is a very successful business.
My Opinion
I have had an amazing experience in Holland and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I also had a good laugh with the lads which was very funny. I have done things which I wouldn't have even had a chance to do in England which I am very pleased about. I would recommend going abroad to anyone and coming to Lorsheijd Groen because then you get a broader experience.
I would also like to thank Mr Lorsheijd and all his employees for giving me this fantastic experience and wish them great success in the future.
There is one other thing as well, I don't like coffee myself but the dutch cant seem to get enough of it, bakkie?
